Position Specific Description


NextEra Energy is currently seeking a Wind Turbine Controls and SCADA Engineer who can apply diversified knowledge of OEM level controls, SCADA principles, and IT/OT concepts to a broad variety of assignments supporting wind power generation. The employee is responsible for independently interpreting, organizing, and executing assignments supporting wind turbine individual and site-level communication and control. This role is also responsible for providing technical guidance, support, and mentoring to other team members as well as collaborating with cross-functional teams to support business objectives. Typical assignments will be across the entire asset lifecycle, primarily focusing on operational and end-of-life IT/OT and SCADA assets such as SCADA systems, PLC’s, communication networks, wind turbine generator controllers, supporting networked applications, and associated virtualized environments. The successful candidate will have a sense of accountability and urgency required to make informed decisions regarding safety, regulatory compliance, system integrity, and technical scope under limited supervision. Alternative position levels are available for the right candidate. 

Responsibilities:



  • Plans and develops engineering projects concerned with unique or controversial complexities which have important impact on major company programs:

  • Acts as subject matter expert to individuals within and outside the organization with responsibility to act independently regarding technical matters pertaining to individual's field

  • Provides technical direction to operations and business unit personnel

  • Performs system testing and documentation for control system changes and upgrades

  • Analyzes and corrects complex application deficiencies and system issues

  • Provides technical leadership in the functional specification, design, and implementation of control solutions

  • Provides automation engineering support for failure mitigation, process improvement, data analytics and improving performance targets

  • Champions the execution of tasks following internal process standards

  • Establishes and/or modifies procedures and guidelines supporting controls and SCADA users 

  • Ability to diagnose and repair complex computer and OT communication system issues as related to power system operation

  • Can understand, troubleshoot, and resolve common network, database, protocol and application issues

  • Familiar with the implementation of NERC Standards as related to SCADA and communications

  • Travels to renewable generation sites occasionally to perform onsite troubleshooting, repair, and upgrades

  • Establishes, modifies, and maintains procedures/guidelines supporting controls and electrical SCADA users

  • Monitors and resolves infrastructure performance, application connectivity, and security related issues using specialized network diagnostic tools and software

  • Aids in the preparation of labor and materials estimates, reviews bids, and assists in overseeing contracted services

  • Displays strong communication and interpersonal skills in a fast-paced operational environment


Qualifications:



  • Process Management Concepts

  • Quality Tools and Techniques

  • Working experience with Networks, SCADA server applications, and PLC’s

  • Working experience with ISO’s and regulating entities 

  • Experience with Modbus, OPC, and DNP3 protocols 

  • Experience with Python, SQL, and C languages

  • Working experience with GE WindSCADA and ControlST, Siemens WPS, Vestas VOB and Online Toolkit

  • Working knowledge of power and voltage regulation fundamentals 

  • Working experience with Ethernet and Serial networks

  • Working knowledge of power fundamentals and voltage control 

  • Strong background in logic development and troubleshooting


 

Travel:  10 - 20%
