Job Description

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a regular, full-time technical editor to join the Technical Publications team and support offices throughout the company. The right candidate could work in an SWCA office or from a distributed location.  

SWCA’s technical reports range from simple memoranda to multichapter, multivolume Environmental Impact Reports 
and Environmental Impact Statements.
The candidate will be responsible for editing and formatting our scientific technical reports and marketing proposals.  

  

This full-time position has occasional evening, weekend, and overtime work when deadlines demand. 

  

The candidate could fill any of three project-level roles based on skill and years of relevant experience: 

 

Assistant Project Technical Editor: Typically up to 3 years of experience. 

Associate Project Technical Editor: Typically up to 5 years of experience. 

Project Technical Editor: Typically up to 7 years of experience. 


What you will accomplish

Edit and format large and small reports (usually containing text, tables, maps and other graphics, and appendices) for correctness, completeness, organization, clarity, consistency, grammar, and conformity with SWCA or client style guidelines. 
Work quickly under tight deadlines while maintaining an appropriate level of quality. 
Communicate efficiently and effectively with project managers and authors to resolve content questions, changes in the schedule, and budget constraints. 
Collaborate with other editors to track updates to style sheets, ensure consistency of voice and content, and meet deadlines. 

Experience and qualifications for success

Bachelor’s degree required  
Two to 10 years of relevant experience. 
Science background and/or technical knowledge of environmental consulting, biological sciences, or cultural resources is highly desirable. 
Experience with CEQA and NEPA compliance documents preferred.   
Command of Microsoft Word, especially Track Changes and Styles functions. Experience with other MS programs and collaborative editing platforms a plus.  
Ability and willingness to learn SWCA’s in-house style guide and client/agency style guides. 
Exceptional organizational skills and ability to balance ever-changing priorities in a fast-paced environment. 
Flexibility, excellent interpersonal skills, and commitment to teamwork. 
Ability to work effectively under pressure and establish or shift priorities under tight deadlines. 
Excellent organizational, verbal, writing, and analytical skills. 
Superior command of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and composition. 
Ability to translate technical jargon into plain language.

An employee in this Sacramento, CA-based project level position can expect a Assistant Project Technical Editor Level hourly pay rate of $27.56 - $34.88/hour, Associate Project Technical Editor annual pay rate of $63,180.00 - $80,730.00/year or Project Technical Editor annual pay rate of Project III: $71,370.00 - $91,260.00/year. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
