Job Description

The Director of Construction will play a crucial role in overseeing the successful installation and commissioning of renewable energy projects from pre-construction to O&M handover. This individual will lead a team of construction managers and field electricians to ensure all projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the specified quality standards. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of power generation, electrical infrastructure, solar photovoltaic, and energy storage systems. This role reports directly to the VP of EPC.

Location(s): North Haven, CT (in-office)

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of construction personnel including project managers, electricians, technicians, and contract negotiators. Provide on-site training as needed. Coach and mentor direct reports.
  • Solve unique or complex issues with the construction team.
  • Utilize software to track key performance indicators for a large portfolio of projects. Report portfolio-level budget and schedule metrics to executive team.
  • Help team members establish plans for course correction when needed. Ensure projects stay in compliance with all applicable laws and contracts to avoid penalties.
  • Perform diligence of contractors. Assist in the negotiation of installation agreements.
  • Act as main point of contact for clients where necessary. Ensure construction team provides frequent updates to external stakeholders.
  • Conduct or schedule pre-award site inspections regarding existing electrical infrastructures. Advise clients on how to upgrade infrastructure to accommodate on-site power generation.
  • Address design and installation best practices with engineering teams.
  • Advise engineering and construction teams regarding unique or complex designs architecture.
  • Review and approve major project costs to maintain positive cash flow.
  • Work with finance department to achieve project funding milestones.
  • Define project installation quality process to ensure long-term project generation and safety.
  • Create and improve process for project closeout and handover to O&M department.
  • Advise preliminary bid team on installation and balance of system cost trends. Consult contractors when required.
  • Maintain safety programs. Enforce field personnel and contractor compliance.
  • Address project related disputes/conflicts and find resolution.

Qualifications:

  • Four-year degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, or at least 5 years’ experience leading construction teams.
  • Electrical Contractor license and background preferred.
  • Experience with renewable energy, electrical infrastructure, or power generation construction.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Experience reading, drafting, and negotiating contracts and legal documents.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Ability to exercise judgement, think critically, and take initiative.
