We are currently seeking an individual to manage our Blue Water Task Force (BWTF) volunteer water quality testing program. This position works under the supervision of the Water Quality Initiative Sr. Manager to support Surfrider’s national network of 55 chapter-run laboratories that measure fecal indicator bacteria levels at hundreds of ocean, bay, estuary and freshwater sampling sites across the country.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Purchase & invoice chapter water testing supplies
- Manage BWTF website & chapter data entry needs
- Onboard new labs & help existing labs troubleshoot issues
- Ensure SOPs and QA/QC protocols are being implemented by volunteers properly
- Assist chapters and regional staff to share, communicate & analyze their data
- Update & develop new training resources as needed
- Manage partnerships with external platforms for sharing BWTF data
- Participate in analysis and writing of the annual Clean Water Report.
- Contribute blog posts, activist spotlights and other content for Surfrider communication channels
- Support chapter efforts to identify pollution sources
- Support chapter advocacy on water quality campaigns and issues
- Provide other clean water program support as needed
- Foster internal support (regional and chapter staff) for BWTF program
- Support fundraising for Clean Water Initiative & BWTF program

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 4 year science degree, or equivalent experience
- Minimum 3 years experience working on coastal or water quality issues
- Experience working with volunteers or a citizen/community science program
- NGO or non-profit experience is a plus
- Knowledge of water quality issues and recreational water quality monitoring programs
- Strong interpersonal skills to maintain positive working relationships with volunteers, staff and external partners
- Comfortable with public speaking both in-person and over virtual platforms
- Strong communication and writing skills for diverse audiences including volunteers, agency staff, elected officials, the general public and other stakeholders
- Proven ability to effectively manage multiple, complex tasks and to establish and regularly evaluate priorities
- Working familiarity with Mac systems and Microsoft office - specifically proficient working knowledge of Excel.
- Experience with database management
- Willing to travel to attend staff meetings and regional chapter conference a few times per year
SALARY
This is a full-time position, which can be performed remotely within the US. The Blue Water Task Force Manager will be paid a competitive salary commensurate with candidate’s experience level and geographic cost of living.

How Does the Surfrider Foundation Establish Salary Ranges?
The Surfrider Foundation researches, evaluates, and compares like-sized non-profit organizations to establish ranges for each position level to ensure that employees are justly compensated. The intent is to compensate employees well within a median pay range philosophy. What does a “median pay range philosophy” mean? It means that if the range for a position is $50,000- $70,000 the median pay for that position would be $60,000. The established range takes multiple factors into account; experience, educational background, scope and complexity of work, special skills, added value to the organization, geographic cost-of-living, inflation/current market demand, equity, and more. The Surfrider Foundation prides itself on a high rate of retention, with 32% of staff having been employed with the organization for 10+ years. Please keep in mind that the maximum end of our ranges also account for longevity and tenure within the role.
