Job Description

The National Wind Technology Center at the NREL Flatiron’s Campus is seeking a qualified candidate with a strong background in atmospheric turbulence and wind loading for solar energy applications to join the wind energy sciences team to support atmospheric sciences research. In particular, the researcher will focus on planning and executing field observation campaigns with different in-situ and remote sensing instruments. The candidate will work with meteorological towers and load sensors to characterize the wind loading on advanced solar or hybrid plants.     

The candidate will execute field observation campaigns, remote measurement data, and characterize the impact of atmospheric turbulence on wind-driven structural loads. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate a broad understanding of atmospheric boundary layer and turbulence physics and wind loading under extreme wind conditions.

The researcher will work with the US Department of Energy Solar and Wind Energy Technology Offices, industry partners, and the international community to execute projects and promote the renewable energy industry.

Basic Qualifications

Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience .

Additional Required Qualifications

The candidate will have excellent writing, interpersonal, and communication skills and will be expected to publish results in high-impact technical journals and present work at conferences, symposia, and review meetings. They will also be expected to support the development of new work proposals, preparations, and reviews. They have a record of publications in high-impact factor journals, and experience in a Linux-based high-performance computing environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • General knowledge of solar energy related disciplines and applications
  • Expertise in atmospheric turbulence, and validation of the numerical models
  • Expertise with analysis of meteorological measurements and validation of model output with observations
  • Expertise in measurement of wind loads
  • Expertise in field observations and execution of field campaigns
  • Proficiency in data analysis

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Researcher III / Annual Salary Range: $79,600 - $143,300
