Six Calpine Facilities Recognized Through Clean Texas Program

Calpine Corporation (NYSE:CPN) today announced that six Calpine facilities have been recognized by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) with Bronze Level membership in the Clean Texas Program for their efforts to achieve significant environmental results, create environmental awareness and protect air, water and land resources in Texas.

“The Clean Texas Program is designed to incent and recognize voluntary environmental excellence,” said Patrick Blanchard, Director, Environmental Health and Safety. “Calpine has long been a leader in helping to create a sustainable future for Texans and Americans, and this is further evidence of that commitment.”

The Calpine facilities achieving TCEQ Bronze Level membership include five power plants – Baytown Energy Center, Freestone Energy Center, Hidalgo Energy Center, Magic Valley Generating Station and Pasadena Power Plant, as well as the company’s corporate headquarters in Houston. To meet the requirements as a Bronze Level facility, each site must adopt one environmental initiative and select one community service project annually.

Examples of Calpine’s environmental initiatives include:
    * Reducing non-transportation energy use by 5,000 megawatt hours at Baytown Energy Center
    * Reducing non-hazardous waste generation by 4 tons per year at Pasadena Power Plant
    * Increasing the recycled content of purchased materials by 20,000 pounds per year at corporate headquarters
Examples of Calpine’s community service projects include:
    * Participating in the Great American Clean-Up, a one-day trash pick-up in local communities, by the Baytown, Hidalgo, Magic Valley and Pasadena plants
    * Adopting commuting solutions under the auspices of the Houston-Galveston Area Council Commute Solutions program at Calpine corporate headquarters, resulting in the office being recognized as a “Best Workplace for Commuters”
    * Hosting the Freestone County Soil and Water Conservation District’s annual wildlife and plant ID competition at Freestone Energy Center
